Yew tree farm Heritage Meats wins a 2011 Great Taste Award
Heritage Meats is celebrating after winning a prestigious 2011 Great Taste Award. Heritage Meats has been presented with two coveted three-star Gold Great Taste Award for its Herdwick Mutton and Herdwick Hogget, the Herdwick mutton was also nominated for the best in the North.
The mutton was also recognised by the national Trust as exceptional and has been awarded the Fine Farm Produce award, this allows he product to carry the well respected National Trust ‘Oak Leaf’.

Heritage Meats is based at Yew Tree farm near Coniston in the Lake District, once owned by Beatrix Potter.
Our animals are reared on the stunning Lakeland fells in a natural and unhurried way. The mixed grass and herb diet, long hanging times and expert butchery creates meat of outstanding flavour and texture.
We specialise in producing ‘old fashioned’ meat using traditional breeds of animals. We rear Herdwick lamb, hogget, mutton and belted Galloway beef.

Jon Watson – Partner of the business says ‘Caroline and I are thrilled with the outcome; we know the product is exceptionally good, but it is so reassuring to have it so rigorously tested and to have such great feedback’.

Now in its 18th year, the Great Taste Awards scheme recognises the best-tasting food and drink available in UK. Over 350 chefs, restaurant critics and specialist retail buyers and other independent food experts were involved in this year’s judging, including TV chef Antonio Carluccio, Masterchef winner Dhruv Baker and top food buyers at Fortnum & Mason and Selfridges.

It took 350 experts 34 days to blind taste all the entries and decide which entries would achieve the coveted one, two and three star gold awards. The judges reduced 7,482 entries down to around 2,400 Great Taste Awards winners who can now add the familiar black-and-gold labels to their jars and packs. Just 114 of these were awarded the top three-star gold awards. To achieve the 3-star rating a minimum of 20 -more often 30 - judges need to be in complete agreement that the food delivered that indefinable ‘wow’ factor.

Jon and Caroline sell their meat direct from the Farm via their web site www.heritagemeats.co.uk to customers who call at their on Farm butchery and to a range of fine eating establishments in the area.

The chefs from Michelin star Sharrow Bay have long known that this meat was special, and have been delighting their fine diners for many years with hogget and mutton from Yew tree farm. Top chef Simon Rogan from l’enclume has been showcasing the Herdwick Hogget in his new London ‘pop up’ and said "Every now and again you find a supplier and think to yourself where have you been for all this time. Yew Tree, Heritage meats is such a supplier, a real find for all our restaurants. Amazing flavours that just cannot be beaten."

In a more down to earth environment, the award winning meat can be sampled in the form of ‘Herdy’ burgers and ‘Mutton Broth’ at the new ‘Heritage Hot Food’ catering trailers that are operating at Wray Campsite and the well known beauty spot ‘Tarn Hows’.

Caroline Watson says ‘The vans are a unique way of providing fine local food in a fast and friendly way. At Tarn Hows you are walking round the land from where the meat you are eating is reared, now that’s local food!’
